The brand owner is the holder of the Ministry of Health registro sanitario: the food label must give the name and domicile of the producer or manufacturer and the phrase "Registrado en el M.S.A.S. bajo el N°" (Reglamento General de Alimentos art. 37), imports packed locally must say "Envasado en el país", and only importers authorised by the Ministry may market foods (Normas Complementarias 1996); cosmetics must name the manufacturer or the party responsible for marketing and the country of origin (Providencia 230-2018 art. 23).
Food labels, or added marbetes, must carry their declarations in Spanish (lengua castellana): name and quality, expiry date, storage and use where required, metric net content, producer name and domicile and the registration number, and the 1996 rules require a visible lot identification and expiry date on national and imported packs, with SACS authorising complementary labels for imports; cosmetics must show net content, warnings, lot, the Registro Sanitario de Producto Cosmético number and an ingredient list headed "ingredientes".
The registration holder answers for every claim: arts. 38–39 of the Reglamento General de Alimentos ban label words suggesting medicinal properties, attributing properties the food does not have or exaggerating its qualities, and art. 40 forbids changing label text of a registered food without prior Ministry authorisation.
